Summernats Citycruise to kick off Chrome Jubilee

The Summernats 3M Citycruise will take to Northbourne Ave at midday on Thursday January 5th 2012 to launch the 25th birthday of the iconic Street Machine Summernats, proudly supported by Rare Spares.

In a street parade of the likes not seen before in Canberra, a convoy of 200 of Australia’s best street machines will parade along Northbourne Avenue.

The Citycruise convoy will make its way from Exhibition Park along Northbourne Avenue to London Circuit, before turning back up along Northbourne to return to the festival venue.

“Myself and the other owners have been talking about doing this since the moment we bought the Nats,” said Summernats co-owner Andy Lopez. “It’s a great celebration of the Summernats in the ACT, and it’s cool that our convoy is going to drive past the hotels, restaurants, and retailers to whom the Summernats bring so much business.

“Canberra families and workers should get out and have a look at the amazing street machines that are part of Summernats 25. We’re also pleased to welcome global megabrand 3M as Citycruise naming rights sponsor.”

“The 3M brand is synonymous with diversity and innovation, so being involved with Summernats and sponsoring the brilliant array of cars in the 3M Citycruise is a perfect fit,” said Bruce Morrison, Managing Director of Motoractive.

Peter Fitzpatrick, the current Summernats Grand Champion, will lead the convoy. “It’s fantastic to see the Summernats on Northborne Avenue,” said Fitzy. “It’ll be a great day for the public to get involved with the Nats, and the convoy will be a pretty incredible sight. It’s definitely an event not to be missed!”

The Citycruise is the result of months of planning with ACT Policing and Roads ACT to ensure a safe activity with minimal disruption to road users and residents. The convoy will be managed by 30 user-pay police on bikes and at intersections to ensure the Citycruise is well controlled.

“We want to thank the ACT Policing and Roads ACT for their support and helping make it happen. We don’t anticipate any antisocial behaviour from our entrants, and we’ll support the Police in making sure behaviour is appropriate,” said Lopez.

The public can watch the 3M Citycruise on Northbourne Ave. A reminder that parking is not allowed on the median strips, and all Northbourne Ave pedestrian and viewing areas are alcohol-free zones.

Summernats 25 will be held at Exhibition Park in Canberra from the 5th – 8th January 2012. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit the website at www.summernats.com.au
