If you have a diesel engine it’s inevitable that sooner or later you’ll have to deal with the issue of black gunk clogging up your intake. If left unattended for too long it can cause all kinds of problems for the longevity and performance of your engine, not to mention an expensive trip to the mechanic.
Why does this build-up happen?
The gunk is caused by two emissions control systems inside your engine. Namely, the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve and exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system.
PROBLEM AND SOLUTION
The gasses contain soot, hydrocarbons, water vapour and other impurities that often build up inside the intake. The oil vapour from the PCV valve and the soot from the EGR system don’t cause any harm on their own, but when they mix the product is a thick black paste that clogs up your engine and leads to power loss, along with a multitude of other issues.

A catch-can is basically a filter installed in-line between the crankcase ventilation tube and the intake manifold recirculation inlet. It works by removing the oil from the air that’s released via the PCV valve. The impurities are trapped in the coalescing filter and drip down to the high-capacity 310ml reservoir. The reservoir has an 8mm quick-drain fitting so oil and sludge can be easily and cleanly disposed of. If the catch-can is not drained, and/or the filter becomes blocked, the Ryco RC351 Catch- Can comes with an internal relief valve that limits crankcase pressure for engine safety. The RCC351 also includes internal baffles to ensure captured contaminants stay put in the sump and are not fed back into the engine air intake.
