There are plenty of shielding gases with different mixtures on the market and this can sometimes make the choice unclear when trying to figure out the right shielding gas for your application.
The main role of shielding gas is to shield the molten weld pool from the air which contains harmful gases such as oxygen, nitrogen and hydrogen. So, it’s critical to have the right shielding gas working for you. Carbon and low-alloy steels require different shielding gases compared to aluminium and stainless steels.
If you are MIG welding carbon and low-alloy steels, BOC has an array of shielding-gas options. With an emphasis on weld quality, appearance, reduced post-weld clean up and excellent fusion characteristics, the ARGOSHIELD® range has a shielding-gas option for all material thicknesses. For sheet and thin plate, ARGOSHIELD® Light and ARGOSHIELD® 54 give an excellent finish and low spatter. For heavier sections, ARGOSHIELD® Heavy and ARGOSHIELD® Universal perform exceptionally well with superior penetration.
The STAINSHIELD® range is designed for MIG welding of stainless steels. STAINSHIELD® Light is for sheet and thin plate, while STAINSHIELD® Heavy is for thicker material.
Argon is normally the ideal gas for TIG welding of carbon, low-alloy and stainless steels.
While argon is suitable for both MIG and TIG welding of thin aluminium alloys, the BOC ALUSHIELD® range provides better penetration and faster welding speeds by generating a higher energy arc. ALUSHIELD® Light is designed for thinner aluminium and ALUSHIELD® Universal or Heavy for the thick sections.
